Chapter 51

Hanuma Narrates the Story of Rama

42 Verses

VR 5.51.1

तम् समीक्ष्य महासत्त्वम् सत्त्ववान् हारि सत्तमः | वाक्यम् अर्थवत् अव्यग्रः तम् उवाच दश आननम् || ५-५१-१

tam samiikShya mahaasattvam sattvavaan haari sattamaH | vaakyam arthavat avyagraH tam uvaaca dasha aananam || 5-51-1

Seeing that highly energetic Ravana, the courageous Hanuma coolly spoke to him the following meaningful words:

VR 5.51.2

अहम् सुग्रीव संदेशात् इह प्राप्तः तव आलयम् | राक्षस इन्द्र हरि ईशः त्वाम् भ्राता कुशलम् अब्रवीत् || ५-५१-२

aham sugriiva sa.ndeshaat iha praaptaH tava aalayam | raakShasa indra hari iishaH tvaam bhraataa kushalam abraviit || 5-51-2

"O king of demons! By the command of Sugreeva, I came here to your abode. Sugreeva, the Lord of monkeys, your brother, asked me to enquire about your welfare.

VR 5.51.3

भ्रातुः शृणु समादेशम् सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः | धर्म अर्थ उपहितम् वाक्यम् इह च अमुत्र च क्षमम् || ५-५१-३

bhraatuH shR^iNu samaadesham sugriivasya mahaatmanaH | dharma artha upahitam vaakyam iha ca amutra ca kShamam || 5-51-3

"Hear the righteous and meaningful words, as a following advice, of the high-souled Sugreeva, your brother, conducive to good in the world as well as in the other world."

VR 5.51.4

राजा दशरथो नाम रथ कुन्जर वाजिमान् | पिता इव बन्धुः लोकस्य सुर ईश्वर सम द्युतिः || ५-५१-४

raajaa dasharatho naama ratha kunjara vaajimaan | pitaa iva bandhuH lokasya sura iishvara sama dyutiH || 5-51-4

"There was a king named Dasaratha, having chariots, elephants and horses, like a father to the people and endowed with a splendour equal to that of Indra the lord of celestials."

VR 5.51.5

ज्येष्ठः तस्य महाबाहुः पुत्रः प्रिय करः प्रभुः | पितुः निदेशान् निष्क्रान्तः प्रविष्टो दण्डका वनम् || ५-५१-५ लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा सीतया च अपि भार्यया | रामो नाम महातेजा धर्म्यम् पन्थानम् आश्रितः || ५-५१-६

jyeShThaH tasya mahaabaahuH putraH priya karaH prabhuH | pituH nideshaan niShkraantaH praviShTo daNDakaa vanam || 5-51-5 lakShmaNena saha bhraatraa siitayaa ca api bhaaryayaa | raamo naama mahaatejaa dharmyam panthaanam aashritaH || 5-51-6

"His eldest son named Rama, having mighty arms, a bestower of affection and our lord, by the command of his father, abiding in a righteous path, went out on exile and entered a forest called Dandaka along with Lakshmana his brother and Seetha his wife."

VR 5.51.7

तस्य भार्या वने नष्टा सीता पतिम् अनुव्रता | वैदेहस्य सुता राज्ञो जनकस्य महात्मनः || ५-५१-७

sa maargamaaNaH taam deviim raaja putraH saha anujaH | R^ishyamuukam anupraaptaH sugriiveNa ca samgataH || 5-51-8

"Seetha, wife of Rama, devoted to her husband and daughter of the high-souled king, named Janaka, the head of Videha kingdom, got lost in the forest."

VR 5.51.8

स मार्गमाणः ताम् देवीम् राज पुत्रः सह अनुजः | ऋश्यमूकम् अनुप्राप्तः सुग्रीवेण च सम्गतः || ५-५१-८

tasya tena pratij~naatam siitaayaaH parimaargaNam | sugriivasya api raameNa hari raajyam niveditam || 5-51-9

"That prince, Rama together with his brother, searching that lady, reached Mount Rishyamuka and happened to meet Sugreeva."

VR 5.51.9

तस्य तेन प्रतिज्ञातम् सीतायाः परिमार्गणम् | सुग्रीवस्य अपि रामेण हरि राज्यम् निवेदितम् || ५-५१-९

tataH tena mR^idhe hatvaa raaja putreNa vaalinam | sugriivaH sthaapito raajye hari R^ikShaaNaam gaNa iishvaraH || 5-51-10

"While Sugreeva promised Rama to get Seetha searched, Rama too promised to get the kingdom of monkeys to Sugreeva."

VR 5.51.10

ततः तेन मृधे हत्वा राज पुत्रेण वालिनम् | सुग्रीवः स्थापितो राज्ये हरि ऋक्षाणाम् गण ईश्वरः || ५-५१-१०

tvayaa vijJNaatapuurvashcha vaalii vaanarapuN^gavaH | raameNa nihataH saMkhye shareNaikena vaanaraH || 5-51-11

"Thereafter, killing Vali in a combat, Rama installed Sugreeva on the throne as a lord of that troop monkeys and bears."

VR 5.51.11

त्वया विज्ञातपूर्वश्च वाली वानरपुङ्गवः | रामेण निहतः संख्ये शरेणैकेन वानरः || ५-५१-११

sa siitaa maargaNe vyagraH sugriivaH satya samgaraH | hariin sampreShayaamaasa dishaH sarvaa hari iishvaraH || 5-51-12

"You may indeed know Vali, the foremost among monkeys, previously. Rama killed that Vali with a single arrow in battle."

VR 5.51.12

स सीता मार्गणे व्यग्रः सुग्रीवः सत्य सम्गरः | हरीन् सम्प्रेषयामास दिशः सर्वा हरि ईश्वरः || ५-५१-१२

taam hariiNaam sahasraaNi shataani niyutaani ca | dikShu sarvaasu maargante adhaH ca upari ca ambare || 5-51-13

"Sugreeva, the lord of monkeys, true to his promise, was intent on searching for Seetha and sent his monkeys to all directions."

VR 5.51.13

ताम् हरीणाम् सहस्राणि शतानि नियुतानि च | दिक्षु सर्वासु मार्गन्ते अधः च उपरि च अम्बरे || ५-५१-१३

vainateya samaaH kecit kecit tatra anila upamaaH | asamga gatayaH shiighraa hari viiraa mahaabalaaH || 5-51-14

"Hundreds, thousands and lakhs of monkeys are searching for her in all quarters, as also below and above in the sky."

VR 5.51.14

वैनतेय समाः केचित् केचित् तत्र अनिल उपमाः | असम्ग गतयः शीघ्रा हरि वीरा महाबलाः || ५-५१-१४

aham tu hanumaan naama maarutasya aurasaH sutaH | siitaayaaH tu kR^ite tuurNam shata yojanam aayatam || 5-51-15 samudram langhayitvaa eva taam didR^ikShuH iha aagataH |

"Among those monkeys, some mighty and virile monkeys are similar to Garuda the eagle. Some are like wind, swiftly going with an unhindered movement."

VR 5.51.15

अहम् तु हनुमान् नाम मारुतस्य औरसः सुतः | सीतायाः तु कृते तूर्णम् शत योजनम् आयतम् || ५-५१-१५ समुद्रम् लन्घयित्वा एव ताम् दिदृक्षुः इह आगतः |

bhramataa cha mayaa dR^iShTaa gR^ihe te janakaatmajaa || 5-51-16 tat bhavaan dR^iShTa dharma arthaH tapaH kR^ita parigrahaH | para daaraan mahaapraaj~na na uparoddhum tvam arhasi || 5-51-17

"I am, however, an own son of wind-god and named as Hanuma. I came here even by crossing quickly the ocean, which is a hundred yojanas (or eight hundred miles) wide for the sake of Seetha and wishing to see her."

VR 5.51.16

भ्रमता च मया दृष्टा गृहे ते जनकात्मजा || ५-५१-१६ तत् भवान् दृष्ट धर्म अर्थः तपः कृत परिग्रहः | पर दारान् महाप्राज्ञ न उपरोद्धुम् त्वम् अर्हसि || ५-५१-१७

na hi dharma viruddheShu bahv apaayeShu karmasu | muula ghaatiShu sajjante buddhimanto bhavat vidhaaH || 5-51-18

"While strolling around in the city of Lanka, I found Seetha in your abode. You know about religious merit and wealth. You performed and mastered the austerities. That is why, you ought not besiege the wife of another, O great intellectual!"

VR 5.51.18

न हि धर्म विरुद्धेषु बह्व् अपायेषु कर्मसु | मूल घातिषु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवत् विधाः || ५-५१-१८

na ca api triShu lokeShu raajan vidyeta kashcana | raaghavasya vyaliikam yaH kR^itvaa sukham avaapnuyaat || 5-51-20

"Intellectuals like you indeed are not engrossed in acts, which are antagonistic to righteousness, which are attended with many dangers and which even ruin the doer at the roots."

VR 5.51.19

कः च लक्ष्मण मुक्तानाम् राम कोप अनुवर्तिनाम् | शराणाम् अग्रतः स्थातुम् शक्तो देव असुरेष्व् अपि || ५-५१-१९

tat trikaala hitam vaakyam dharmyam artha anubandhi ca | manyasva nara devaaya jaanakii pratidiiyataam || 5-51-21

"Who is capable even among celestials and demons, to withstand the arrows discharged by Lakshmana, in the wake of the fury of Rama?

VR 5.51.20

न च अपि त्रिषु लोकेषु राजन् विद्येत कश्चन | राघवस्य व्यलीकम् यः कृत्वा सुखम् अवाप्नुयात् || ५-५१-२०

dR^iShTaa hi iyam mayaa devii labdham yat iha durlabham | uttaram karma yat sheSham nimittam tatra raaghavaH || 5-51-22

"O king! No one is known in the three worlds, who have gained happiness, by doing harm to Rama."

VR 5.51.21

तत् त्रिकाल हितम् वाक्यम् धर्म्यम् अर्थ अनुबन्धि च | मन्यस्व नर देवाय जानकी प्रतिदीयताम् || ५-५१-२१

lakShitaa iyam mayaa siitaa tathaa shoka paraayaNaa | gR^ihya yaam na abhijaanaasi panca aasyaam iva pannagiim || 5-51-23

"That is why, accede to my words, which are beneficial for all the three divisions of time (viz. the past, present and future), resulting in affluence and respectability as well. Let Seetha be restored to Rama."

VR 5.51.22

दृष्टा हि इयम् मया देवी लब्धम् यत् इह दुर्लभम् | उत्तरम् कर्म यत् शेषम् निमित्तम् तत्र राघवः || ५-५१-२२

na iyam jarayitum shakyaa saasuraiH amaraiH api | viSha sa.nsR^iShTam atyartham bhuktam annam iva ojasaa || 5-51-24

"I beheld Seetha, the princess. The audience of Seetha is difficult to be achieved and it is obtained here. It is for Rama there to decide his remaining task of future consequence."

VR 5.51.23

लक्षिता इयम् मया सीता तथा शोक परायणा | गृह्य याम् न अभिजानासि पन्च आस्याम् इव पन्नगीम् || ५-५१-२३

tapaH samtaapa labdhaH te yo ayam dharma parigrahaH | na sa naashayitum nyaayya aatma praaNa parigrahaH || 5-51-25

"Capturing Seetha, whom you do not recognize as a five-hooded female serpent in your abode, has been found by me in that manner, and wholly given over to sorrow."

VR 5.51.24

न इयम् जरयितुम् शक्या सासुरैः अमरैः अपि | विष संसृष्टम् अत्यर्थम् भुक्तम् अन्नम् इव ओजसा || ५-५१-२४

avadhyataam tapobhiH yaam bhavaan samanupashyati | aatmanaH saasuraiH devaiH hetuH tatra api ayam mahaan || 5-51-26

"She is incapable of being devoured with one's might even by celestials and demons, any more than food mixed with abundant poison could be digested with one's digestive power, if consumed."

VR 5.51.25

तपः सम्ताप लब्धः ते यो अयम् धर्म परिग्रहः | न स नाशयितुम् न्याय्य आत्म प्राण परिग्रहः || ५-५१-२५

sugriivo na hi devo ayam na asuro na ca maanuShaH | na daanavo na gandharvo na yakSho na cha pannagaH || 5-51-27 tasmaat praaNa paritraaNam katham raajan kariShyasi |

"It is not proper for you to lose your exceptional longevity and that fortune which is an outcome of your virtue, both of which have been acquired by you through the practice of austerities."

VR 5.51.26

अवध्यताम् तपोभिः याम् भवान् समनुपश्यति | आत्मनः सासुरैः देवैः हेतुः तत्र अपि अयम् महान् || ५-५१-२६

na tu dharma upasamhaaram adharma phala samhitam || 5-51-28 tat eva phalam anveti dharmaH ca adharma naashanaH |

"You may be thinking that you are immune from death from demons and celestials, because of your austerities. But your opinion in that matter is not correct, on account of the following reason.

VR 5.51.27

सुग्रीवो न हि देवो अयम् न असुरो न च मानुषः | न दानवो न गन्धर्वो न यक्षो न च पन्नगः || ५-५१-२७ तस्मात् प्राण परित्राणम् कथम् राजन् करिष्यसि |

praaptam dharma phalam taavat bhavataa na atra sa.nshayaH || 5-51-29 phalam asya api adharmasya kShipram eva prapatsyase |

"This Sugreeva is indeed neither a god, nor Asura the chief of evil spirits nor a demon nor a child of Danu the demon, nor Gandharva the celestial musician nor Yaksha the semi-divine being nor pannaga the serpent-demon. O King! How do you protect your life from him?"

VR 5.51.28

न तु धर्म उपसम्हारम् अधर्म फल सम्हितम् || ५-५१-२८ तत् एव फलम् अन्वेति धर्मः च अधर्म नाशनः |

jana sthaana vadham buddhvaa buddhvaa vaali vadham tathaa || 5-51-30 raama sugriiva sakhyam ca budhyasva hitam aatmanaH |

"The fruit of righteousness does not exist together with the result of unrighteousness (eventhough he practices virtue). That consequence of unrighteousness alone follows him. Righteousness in abundance destroys unrighteousness."

VR 5.51.29

प्राप्तम् धर्म फलम् तावत् भवता न अत्र संशयः || ५-५१-२९ फलम् अस्य अपि अधर्मस्य क्षिप्रम् एव प्रपत्स्यसे |

kaamam khalv aham api ekaH savaaji ratha kunjaraam || 5-51-31 lankaam naashayitum shaktaH tasya eSha tu vinishcayaH |

"You already obtained the fruit of virtue till now. There is no doubt about it. In no time, you will obtain the fruit of unrighteousness also."

VR 5.51.30

जन स्थान वधम् बुद्ध्वा बुद्ध्वा वालि वधम् तथा || ५-५१-३० राम सुग्रीव सख्यम् च बुध्यस्व हितम् आत्मनः |

raameNa hi pratij~naatam hari R^ikSha gaNa samnidhau || 5-51-32 utsaadanam amitraaNaam siitaa yaiH tu pradharShitaa |

"Recognizing the killing of demons in the forest of Janasthana, about the killing of Vali and about the friendship between Rama and Sugreeva, realize your own interest."

VR 5.51.31

कामम् खल्व् अहम् अपि एकः सवाजि रथ कुन्जराम् || ५-५१-३१ लन्काम् नाशयितुम् शक्तः तस्य एष तु विनिश्चयः |

apakurvan hi raamasya saakShaat api puram daraH || 5-51-33 na sukham praapnuyaat anyaH kim punaH tvat vidho janaH |

"I am indeed, even alone, undoubtedly, destroying Lanka, along with its horses, chariots and elephants. However, this is not in accordance with the resolution of Rama."

VR 5.51.32

रामेण हि प्रतिज्ञातम् हरि ऋक्ष गण सम्निधौ || ५-५१-३२ उत्सादनम् अमित्राणाम् सीता यैः तु प्रधर्षिता |

yaam siitaa iti abhijaanaasi yaa iyam tiShThati te vashe || 5-51-34 kaala raatrii iti taam viddhi sarva lankaa vinaashiniim |

"For, Rama, indeed, promised in the presence of troops of monkeys and bears, about the extermination of enemies, by whom Seetha was actually laid violent hands upon."

VR 5.51.33

अपकुर्वन् हि रामस्य साक्षात् अपि पुरम् दरः || ५-५१-३३ न सुखम् प्राप्नुयात् अन्यः किम् पुनः त्वत् विधो जनः |

tat alam kaala paashena siitaa vigraha ruupiNaa || 5-51-35 svayam skandha avasaktena kShamam aatmani cintyataam |

"Even Indra the Lord of celestials, in person, cannot attain happiness if he does any harm to Rama. How much move to another person like you?"

VR 5.51.34

याम् सीता इति अभिजानासि या इयम् तिष्ठति ते वशे || ५-५१-३४ काल रात्री इति ताम् विद्धि सर्व लन्का विनाशिनीम् |

siitaayaaH tejasaa dagdhaam raama kopa prapiiDitaam || 5-51-36 dahyamanaam imaam pashya puriim saaTTa pratolikaam |

"Know her, whom you recognize as Seetha and who stays in your captivity, to be none else than Kalaratri (the goddess presiding over and responsible for dissolution), who can destroy the entire Lanka."

VR 5.51.35

तत् अलम् काल पाशेन सीता विग्रह रूपिणा || ५-५१-३५ स्वयम् स्कन्ध अवसक्तेन क्षमम् आत्मनि चिन्त्यताम् |

svaani mitraaNi mantrii.nshcha jJNaatiin bhraatR^in sutaan hitaan || 5-51-37 bhogaan daaraa.nshcha laN^kaam cha maa vinaashamupaanaya |

"Therefore, have it enough of this noose of death, in the form of Seetha's personality, which has been placed by yourself around your neck. Think well of your safety."

सीतायाः तेजसा दग्धाम् राम कोप प्रपीडिताम् || ५-५१-३६ दह्यमनाम् इमाम् पश्य पुरीम् साट्ट प्रतोलिकाम् |

satyam raakShasaraajendra shR^iNuShva vachanam mama || 5-51-38 raamadaasasya duutasya vaanarasya visheShataH |

"See; (in the immediate future), this city of Lanka, burnt away by the effulgence of Seetha and the City too being scorched with its markets and main streets, afflicted by the wrath of Rama."

VR 5.51.37

स्वानि मित्राणि मन्त्रींश्च ज्ञातीन् भ्रातृन् सुतान् हितान् || ५-५१-३७ भोगान् दारांश्च लङ्काम् च मा विनाशमुपानय |

sarvaan lokaan susamhR^itya sabhuutaan sacharaacharaan || 5-51-39 punareva tathaa sraShTum shakto raamo mahaayashaaH |

"Do not lead to extermination your own friends, counsellors, kinsmen, brothers, sons, well-wishers, enjoyments, wives and Lanka."

VR 5.51.38

सत्यम् राक्षसराजेन्द्र शृणुष्व वचनम् मम || ५-५१-३८ रामदासस्य दूतस्य वानरस्य विशेषतः |

devaasuranarendreShu yakSharakShogaNeShu cha || 5-51-40 vidyaadhareShu sarveShu gandharveShuurageShu cha | siddheShu kinnarendreShu patatriShu cha sarvataH || 5-51-41 sarvabhuuteShu sarvatra sarvakaaleShu naasti saH | yoraamam pratiyudhyeta viShNutulyaparaakramam || 5-51-42

"O king of demons! Listen to my truthful words coming as it is from the lips of this servant of Rama, his messenger and particularly of this monkey."

VR 5.51.39

सर्वान् लोकान् सुसम्हृत्य सभूतान् सचराचरान् || ५-५१-३९ पुनरेव तथा स्रष्टुम् शक्तो रामो महायशाः |

sarvalokeshvarasyaivam kR^itvaa vipriyamuttamam | raamasya raajasimhasya durlabham tava jiivitam || 5-51-43

"The renowned Rama is capable of totally destroying all the worlds together with its five elements, along with its animate and inanimate things and also to create yet again all the worlds in like manner as before."

VR 5.51.40

देवासुरनरेन्द्रेषु यक्षरक्षोगणेषु च || ५-५१-४० विद्याधरेषु सर्वेषु गन्धर्वेषूरगेषु च | सिद्धेषु किन्नरेन्द्रेषु पतत्रिषु च सर्वतः || ५-५१-४१ सर्वभूतेषु सर्वत्र सर्वकालेषु नास्ति सः | योरामम् प्रतियुध्येत विष्णुतुल्यपराक्रमम् || ५-५१-४२

devaashcha daityaashcha nishaacharendra | gandharvavidyaadharanaagayakShaaH | raamasya lokatrayanaayakasya | sthaatum na shaktaaH samareShu sarve || 5-51-44

"The renowned Rama, who is equal in prowess to Vishnu the lord of the preservation and among celestials, demons or the foremost of men, or among hordes of Yakshas the semi-divine beings or ogres or among all Vidyadharas, a king of super-natural beings or among Gandharvas the celestials musicians or among Uragas the semi-divine serpents or among Siddhas the holy personages having super-natural powers or among excellent Kinnaras the mythical beings with human figure and head of a horse or among all types of birds or among all living beings at all places and at all times."

VR 5.51.43

सर्वलोकेश्वरस्यैवम् कृत्वा विप्रियमुत्तमम् | रामस्य राजसिम्हस्य दुर्लभम् तव जीवितम् || ५-५१-४३

"After doing a great harm in this manner to Rama the lord of all worlds as well as the lion among kings, your survival will be difficult."

VR 5.51.44

देवाश्च दैत्याश्च निशाचरेन्द्र | गन्धर्वविद्याधरनागयक्षाः | रामस्य लोकत्रयनायकस्य | स्थातुम् न शक्ताः समरेषु सर्वे || ५-५१-४४

"O king of demons! Either celestials or demons or Gandharvas the celestial musicians or Vidyadharas a king of super-natural beings or Nagas the semi-divine serpents or Yakshas the semi divine beings-all of them are not able to stand before Rama the lord of the three worlds."

VR 5.51.45

ब्रह्म स्वयमुभूश्च तुराननो वा | रुद्रस्त्रिणेत्रस्त्रिपुरान्तको वा | इन्द्रो महेन्द्रः सुरनायको वा | त्रातुम् न शक्ता युधि रामवध्यम् || ५-५१-४५

"Either Brahma the self-existing god with four faces or Rudra with three eyes and the destroyer of Tripura (the city built of gold, silver and iron in the sky, air and earth, by Maya for the demons and burnt by Shiva), or Mahendra the god of atmosphere and sky as also the lord of celestials would not be able to protect the one to be killed by Rama in battle."

VR 5.51.46

स सौष्ठव उपेतम् अदीन वादिनः | कपेः निशम्य अप्रतिमो अप्रियम् वचः | दश आननः कोप विवृत्त लोचनः | समादिशत् तस्य वधम् महाकपेः || ५-५१-४६

Hearing those unpleasant words endowed with extreme skillfulness and which were spoken without fear from Hanuma, that unequalled Ravana ordered for the killing of that Hanuma.
